The world that we live in is nuanced and we exist in the grey area in between good and bad, or my good is your bad, or good intentions with bad outcomes, or maybe there is no good and bad, there is just existing. I find interest in these dichotomies, where we force a judgment value on things which are far more complex than being split up into two categories. As humans we do this all the time without even thinking. In Some Binarisms/The Two Ways of Life am I creating binaries and making judgement calls from inside the house. At first glance it may seem that I’m calling one side good and one side bad, but I’m actually interested in provoking thought around why one might assume that I’m privileging one side over the other. What does someone’s assumptions say about their own position and value systems? If you look at a picture and view one figure as good and one as bad, I want you to examine why? What are the motivations behind each side of this binary? How can you empathize with someone who you see as your ideological opponents? How does politics fit into this equation? Who mediates both sides, especially when we’re calling the notion of distinct sides into question?
